Z ATX And Orion 15 In Woodward's Control Systems For US Navy Destroyers
San Diego, CA, USA -- September 8, 2003 - Z Microsystems' ZATX computers and Orion 15Pt flat panel displays are used in Woodward's Local Control Panel (LOCOP) systems for the US Navy's DDG-51 Class destroyer's electrical power systems. The custom-built, lightweight ZATX and rugged Orion 15Pt help monitor the destroyer's three electrical generator sets (commonly known as "gen sets"). These Rolls Royce-designed gen sets provide power for the Destroyers. The ZATX also runs the US Navy's system software, including its Human/Machine Interface (HMI) software on the Woodward Netcon controller located within the LOCOP system. The HMI is used to talk with the controls and the resulting video output is displayed on the Orion 15Pt. The outputs include a graphical user interface (GUI) called iFIX (by Intellution) on a Windows NT platform. The Orion 15Pt, with its SAW touch-screen capability, allows the US Navy to tour the software and activate gen set functions with the single touch of a finger. Woodward will also be using Z Microsystems' field-ready computing solutions to support the Rolls Royce three-megawatt gen sets on the US Navy's CG47-Class cruisers. Some of the destroyer installs will happen simultaneously with the cruiser roll-out, making Z Microsystems a leading contributor to the United States Naval fleet.
