Tomahawk Cruise Missile Contractor Chooses ZX Station for Communication Controls |
|
The Z Microsystems' ZX Station has become an integral facet to the military's Tomahawk Cruise Missile program. The ultra rugged computer acts as a controlling liaison between the Tomahawk Mission Distribution System (MDS) and the Tomahawk Strike Network (TSN). The rugged ZX Station manages and controls the communication between the two layers so that direct application networks aren't affected by changes in the legacy subsystems. The ZX Station link prevents any direct hindrance to the top level application technology when alterations in the COTS subsystems occur due to EOL developments. The ZX Station, acting as the Tomahawk Command Interface Processor (TCIP), presents a vital conduit of communication and protected connectivity between the application interface layers and the legacy software systems. "A PC-based system hosted under the Linux OS," writes one ComGlobal Tomahawk Program Manager, "TCIP [ZX Station link] was conceived as a lower-cost, and more flexible alternative" to the existing technology. ComGlobal is spear-heading the TCIP program. The cost savings lay primarily in the protection factor. If upgrades occur on one end, the ZX Station shelters the application software in the transition. This means that necessary cycles of encryption technology changes, network alterations, and command and control structure shifts are a seamless endeavor for the Tomahawk Cruise Missile program.
