Prominent Military Program Chooses Z MPU for Rugged Computing |
|
With the development of its new line of field-ready Z Multiple Processor Units (2x, 4x and 7x), Z Microsystems is shedding light on the benefits of future-proof, COTS-conscious computing technologies. As the Army migrates toward Joint Command and Control (JC2) operations, innovators with a higher caliber of networking versatility define what the Armed Forces refer to as a "common operational picture" (COP). Z Microsystems' Z MPU is one of those innovations and shows its versatility in TRADOC, the US Army's Training and Doctrine Command Unit. TRADOC chose the Z MPU as part of an upgrade requirement for an Army mobile shelter computing station. The ZMPU's ability to house multiple motherboard options, including Sun, UltraSPARC, Intel Dual Xeon, and Intel Pentium, enables up to seven different operating systems and mission–related software suites to run simultaneously. The ZMPU "is the only multiple processor unit used by the military to leverage standard COTS motherboard architectures" (BattleSpace, UK, Review of AUSA Show 2005, Florida). Always aware of COTS ever-evolving components, Z Microsystems designed the ZMPU to hot-swap blades in the field, mix and match systems, and maintain a small footprint for field flexibility. "Raytheon has been a long-time partner and co-designer of several of Z Microsystems' field-ready COTS-based products," says Bill Sampson, Raytheon Corporation's program manager. "We find Z Microsystems to be a very responsive partner and innovative computer systems designer for specialized military applications."
